Rodent Problems

I was cutting my grass the other day and I have come across two problems in the yard. One are gophers. I have three or four pretty big gopher holes in my yard. I have tried drowning them out. Here is a great mental picture for you. Me standing over the gopher hole with the garden hose in one hand shooting water down the hole and a sledge hammer in the other hand waiting for the gopher to come out. But no gophers came out.
I also have a problem with ants. There are two big ant hills in my yard. Any ideas on how to get rid of these pests?

Gophers:

Use a fishing pole and tie a slip knot at the end of the line. Put it over the hole as a circle (lassoo). When the litle critters come out of their hole they always look around (peek to the L & R) to see if danger awaits. When they do this you have a great 2-3 second window to snap the line like you're hooking a fish and you will catch the furry little rodent in the slip knot. I have seen this done by Todd, it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen out at Ehrgott's house last summer. After you catch it do with it as you will and since you are trying to get rid of them, I would say kill it. Or put it out in the Honey Creek parkway somewhere. It works buddy - no kidding.

Um Richard...with your recent healthcare issues, please be aware that the 13 stipped gopher is known to care "the plague". Just looking out for ya buddy!

Borky,

That is some great input. We might have to spend some time in the backyard on July 4th weekend to take care of these little buggers.

Tree,
I was unaware that "the plague" was still around.

Care for some gopher?

No thank you, Delmar. One third of a gopher would only arouse my appetite without bedding it down.

Oh, you can have the whole thing. Me and Pete already had one apiece. We ran across a whole... gopher village.

We'll slay em' Rickie. Get 2 fishing rods.

I looked on line and I believe that Home Depot sell gopher traps. "But if I kill all the gophers, they are going to lock me up and throw away the key? Gophers you greek, not golfers. We can do that. We don't even need a reason. Well than do it man." So I am going to try that. I don't think I have patience right now for the rod and reel suggestion.
I also found on line that bleach works on ant hills. Plus I am going to try the ant traps that I used in my kitchen. Why wouldn't they work outside.
